VISION THERAPY: MORE EFFECTIVE VISION FOR ADULTS & KIDS

Read About Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy helps patients improve their foundation for reading, learning and playing sports. It’s a series of custom and individualized activities and exercises which function as a form of neuro-optometric rehabilitation. The goal is to enhance eye tracking, focusing and eye teaming abilities as well as eye-hand coordination and visual processing speed.

The program is not only for children. Vision Therapy is effective for adults, especially if they are motivated to improve their visual abilities.

A learning-related visual problem directly affects how we learn, read, or sustain close work. Because difficulties with reading and learning affect the child's ability to focus, vision related learning problems are often misdiagnosed as ADHD or other behavioural issues.

It is common for children who have Learning Disabilities to have vision problems that contribute to these learning problems. Vision Therapy does not correct learning disabilities, but correcting the underlying vision problems through Vision Therapy often solves many of the obstacles that make learning more difficult than it need be.

A brain injury such as a concussion will often disrupt the visual process that interfere with how information is taken in and processed. Vision can be also be compromised as a result of a neurological disorder such as a stroke, a brain tumor or Multiple Sclerosis. These are termed Acquired Brain Injuries. Vision Therapy can help.

LOW VISION: REDEFINING VISION LOSS

Read About Low Vision

Low vision is considered significant vision impairment that usually results from serious eye disease or an injury. The vision loss, which is characterized by either reduced visual acuity (to 20/70 or worse) or reduced field of view, can’t be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses, medication or surgery.

These are devices that help people with low vision function by maximizing their remaining eyesight. This often involves the use of magnifiers (handheld, mounted or stand-alone), telescopes and other tools to enlarge the images of objects to make them more visible. Some visual aids reduce glare and enhance contrast which makes it easier to see. Other low vision aids act as guides to help the person focus on non-visual cues, such as sound or feel. Finding the right visual aid is a matter of consulting with a professional and experimenting with what works for you and your daily needs.

During your low vision eye exam we will determine your level of vision, see if new regular glasses will be an improvement,  discuss your wish list and help decide the best solution to help you regain as much day to day functioning as possible.

You will discuss with your doctor your specific vision goals, such as reading, writing, recognizing faces, watching TV, or driving. We will determine what areas of your vision are lacking, whether central or peripheral. We will then recommend the various low vision aids or devices that will help you do what you want to do.

DRY EYE SYNDROME: SOLUTIONS FOR A COMPLEX PROBLEM

Read About Dry Eye Syndrome

Even without knowing the term “dry eye” or “Dry Eye Syndrome“, if you suffer from it, then you are all too familiar with the soreness, discomfort, and even the constant misery that can come with dry eyes.

We use the most advanced diagnostic equipment and tools to quickly and accurately pinpoint the cause and type of dry eye problem you’re suffering from. We don’t just throw any old drops at you either. We provide custom, tailored treatment plans designed to maximize the relief of your dry eye symptoms AND treat the underlying cause of your discomfort.

Our dry eye doctor may conduct an in-depth assessment of indicators for other diseases and health problems which might be contributing factors to your dry eyes. Then we develop a personalized treatment plan based on what we find.

On every patient questionnaire, we ask if you are suffering from any of the typical symptoms of dry eyes. Do your eyes feel gritty? Sore? Do you feel like something is in your eye or that you just don't seem to have any tears? If you report symptoms of dry eye, or appear to exhibit those symptoms, then we recommend beginning the dry eye exam process, which is quick, easy, and painless.

There are many ways to treat Dry Eye Syndrome. The first recommendation is to prevent dry eye symptoms before they start, and to address lifestyle factors that may be making it worse.

Blink a lot and drink a lot. Avoid eye irritants, use lubricating eye drops if you are taking medication that puts you at risk for dry eye. Over the counter eye drops for dry eye are widely available. Maintain a healthy lifestyle with a focus on vitamins like Omega 3.

MYOPIA CONTROL: TREATMENTS TO STOP PROGRESSION

Read About Myopia Control

Because myopia is very often progressive, distance vision continues to get worse and worse. This means your child constantly needs an updated stronger prescription and new glasses or contacts. The progression of myopia often outpaces your child’s eye exams. Since learning is by and large visual, myopia negatively affects your child’s school performance. What’s more, the rate of progression of myopia directly correlates with the risk levels of developing vision-threatening eye diseases.

A rigid contact lens is custom-made for your child’s eyes by our Myopia Control experts. These special lenses are worn at night by your child. As your child sleeps, the lenses gently reshape the cornea of the eyes. This reshaping corrects the elongation of the eye which causes the myopia. What this means is that the wearer won’t need glasses or contact lenses during the day at all — an especially appealing option for kids who don’t want to wear glasses or young athletes. What’s more, Ortho-k has been proven to be highly effective at slowing and halting the progression of myopia, so it is also protecting your child’s adult vision while freeing them from glasses in the here and now.

Myopia puts your child at risk for a wide range of serious and potentially devastating eye conditions later in life. These risks include:

  • Cataracts
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma

The more advanced the progression, the greater the risks associated with the Myopia. However, the research is now showing that any amount of myopia is dangerous.

SCLERAL LENSES: REVOLUTIONARY CONTACT LENS TECHNOLOGY

Read About Scleral Lenses

Have you tried to wear contact lenses only to end up wearing glasses as you suffered too much discomfort? Is your vision worsening due to Keratoconus or other corneal conditions? Thousands of people who suffer vision loss as a result of various corneal conditions  can now see clearly once again through scleral lenses.

Those who couldn’t wear contact lens due to eye conditions or discomfort are able to correct their vision safely & successfully. Say goodbye to the old days of contact lenses that didn’t work for you. You no longer have to suffer discomfort or simply being forced to live with poor vision.

The clear tissue on the eye’s outermost surface covering the pupil and the iris is called the cornea. The cornea’s function is to bend and focus light going into the eyes. Normally, the cornea has a smooth shape to provide clear vision. When the shape of the cornea becomes irregular, the light entering the eyes is not focused properly. Consequently, an individual will suffer distorted and irregular vision.

Keratoconus is a condition of the cornea that affects between .1% to .5% of the population, or 300 thousand to 1.6 million Americans. Keratoconus causes severe vision loss and discomfort but can be effectively corrected with scleral contact lenses.

The vaulted dome design of scleral lenses offers unique advantages over traditional contact lens design. Scleral lenses move around much less than regular contacts, making them superior for physical activity, with far less irritation.

The vaulted dome shape of a scleral lens provides a smooth replacement corneal surface, improving vision for people with corneal scarring or corneal irregularities due to LASIK eye surgery complications, Keratoconus, or other eye conditions

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a type of laser refractive surgery — the best known and most commonly performed. A special type of sculpting laser is used to meticulously change the shape of your cornea to improve your vision.

Why is it so popular? LASIK has advantages over other vision correction procedures, including a relative lack of pain afterward and the fact that good vision usually is achieved by the very next day.

Utilizing cutting edge technology, we are diagnosing and managing, with greater precision, diseases like Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration Cataracts, and Diabetic Retinopathy. Earlier and more precise diagnosis means earlier treatment and better outcomes. We are taking an aggressive approach to diseases that previously had few treatment options. Great advances have been made in the treatment of these diseases.

Cataract surgery is the removal of the natural lens of the eye that has developed an opacification, which is referred to as a cataract. During cataract surgery, a patient’s cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a synthetic lens to restore the lens’s transparency.

Following surgical removal of the natural lens, an artificial intraocular lens implant is inserted. Cataract surgery is generally performed by an ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) in an ambulatory (rather than inpatient) setting, in a surgical center or hospital, using local anesthesia (either topical, peribulbar, or retrobulbar), usually causing little or no discomfort to the patient. Well over 90% of operations are successful in restoring useful vision.
